The year in wellbeing: reflecting on 2021

Since it hit the world in early 2020, Covid has and continues to shape life and society in the UK and beyond. With the pandemic came issues concerning isolation, health inequalities, working life and access to social support, and the terms ‘wellbeing’ and ‘mental health’ have become part of mainstream public discussion.

The terms ‘wellbeing’ and ‘well-being’ returned 207.5 million news results on Google from January 2018 to December 2019. In the same months between 2020 and 2021, it was 4.7 billion.

The What Works Centre for Wellbeing exists to understand what works to improve wellbeing, an area which in this period has become more pertinent than ever. As we look back and reflect on the year, we have seen some major milestones in our core missions: democratising access to wellbeing evidence and highlighting evidence gaps, promoting greater visibility of wellbeing concepts and putting evidence into practical action.
